RE: Callback Failed error when changing ink cartridges on hp z6100
Are you running the printer on port 9100? I seem to remember that being the source of a lot of callback errors on this model. Something to do with port 9100 being bi-directional in communication as opposed to others. The callback error is saying that it's sending a command and the printer is not responding, if I remember correctly, so perhaps without the bi-directional communication it's not being told to hold tight, so to speak, by the printer while you change the cartridges.

I'm no expert on this, as I don't have one of those machines, so this is really just a (barely educated) guess. Hopefully one of the smarter folks with experience will chime in a bit later.

Yes we use port 9100 bi-directional because of the built-in calibration device. I read it too that alot of problems are with port 9100. Our service provider says we have to hang on the old version of PosterShop (7.1.0.40). I want to update to the newest version and the newest print driver if i'm sure the callback problem is solved... ./sigh

/begin rant
I work for 2 years with postershop now and it's a lousy piece of software... The user interface is stuck in the 90's (you can't resize the open file dialog box), i must split multi-page pdf's because i can't say print page 1 ten times and page 2 4 four times. How in name is PosterShop 7 and upgrade to version 6? The piece of crap is probably programmed in visual basic. And then to see that you have to pay for support makes my blood boil as european, we're used to other service over here...

Thank God in found this forum Wink

RE: Callback Failed error when changing ink cartridges on hp z6100
The experience of the z6100 with early v7 Onyx was certainly a tough time - it's a very complex printer and early v7 Onyx was very buggy - it did take Onyx a while to get a handle on it - as did the other rip manufacturers it should be said. It's pretty stable now though.

We have several hundred of these printers in the field - most with Onyx - and I can't think of a reason why we would keep someone on such an old version of the rip - did your dealer give a reason why you should stay on 7.1?

There has been a big jump in performance from 7.1 to where we are now v7.3.2 and I would advise you to upgrade if possible - 7.1 has a number of problems that have now been fixed and its a free and simple upgrade.

We have not seen the callback issue on systems recently - I can't say if it is the latest version that has fixed it as there are several other steps you should do as well:

1. Use a gigabit network
2. Use Port 9100
3. On the printer - turn the queue off and set the start print to "immediate"
4. ensure ports 9100 and 161 are open on the network
5. Turn off power management on the NIC running the printer
6. Always restart the printer after making any change to the printers network connectivity.
7. use the latest fw on the printer

When the above is used on installs or troubleshooting we don't seem to get the issue - if you do it would be interesting to know.

Much of the above advice is available FOC on the Onyx website (Knowledgebase)

Point 6 catches many people out - failing to restart can cause some odd effects after a network alteration on the printer & some users never turn their printers off - we come across printers that have been reconfigured and then have connectivity issues for months - they have forgotton all about a connectivity change they made months ago...all that was required was a printer restart.

Also you can select the PDF page and number of copies in Preflight:

Open your job directly from Preflight (not from the rip) & go to the "Preview & Size" tab and select the page number you want & hit "Apply". Select the number of copies required & hit "Print" to send it to ripqueue.

Then go back and select a different page number and repeat.

BTW there is an important patch just released on the onyx website that you should apply if you do update to the current version.

I think you should ask your dealer to explain why he doesn't want to update your rip?

I would expect him to troubleshoot these printer issues for you or at least show you how to find the answers you need on the website.

Also he should be able to help take you through Preflight re multipage PDF printing.

It may be he's not interested in investing the time to do this - do you have a service contract with him? ;-)

RE: Callback Failed error when changing ink cartridges on hp z6100
Wow Mutz.... tell us what you really think!

I have not seen a callback error in a long time on my Z's. Port 9100 is what fixed it all for me.

I almost hate to put this out there - but I have been having problems printing multi-page PDFs in Onyx 7.3.2. I drop them into a hot folder, and they just never show up.... Not sure what that happens, but I have since taken to extracting pages as separate files, then dropping on the RIP individually.

I do understand what you're saying with the multi-page PDF quantities. There is nowhere, for example, to say print 10 of page 1, 4 of page 2, 7 of page 3, etc... simply and easily through some kind of dialog box.

I agree completely with Hotspur, though. 7.3.2 is WAY advanced compared to 7.1.x. I would definitely upgrade, hands down. Make sure you do an uninstall and clean install, though, rather than an over-the-top installation. I find that I get more problems when I do that. Also, there is a new JawsDLL.dll file for 7.3.2 that I would be stuck on a lot of files without it. It's actually on this forum somewhere, I believe.

Good luck.

RE: Callback Failed error when changing ink cartridges on hp z6100
Well i'm not the ony deciding what gets installed. Generally i'm the 'as soon as possible' update guy. My superior is more of the type 'if it isn't badly broken, then don't touch it' guy... Confused
Those callback errors when changing ink do cost us money and time... if they happen in the middle of a print run then i have to count everything to know how much prints i got.

Is there no way clean install the new version and leave the old installation untouched?
We have recently installed a Canon imagepress c6000 (excellent machine) with a fiery command workstation and i can choose between version 4 & 5 without problems

RE: Callback Failed error when changing ink cartridges on hp z6100
I don't know if you can do two installs. I am sure you can choose a different install location when installing the new version - not sure if you could run both Postershops, though. I guarantee you can't run them simultaneously, just not sure if the computer can host two.

I can say I have one problem with changing ink cartridges, that was not a problem before. When I run out of ink, and change the cartridge, the printer sends a cancel command to the RIP and stops the print. The Z did not always do this, just started doing it recently. I am up to date on firmware, too... not sure why it is happening all of a sudden.

Well i just updated the firmware of my Z to the latest firmware gg-gg_10.0.0.3 i will see if it happens again but i think the problems lies with my old postershop... Next time i have a cartridge change i will wait some time to see what happens.
